
People are encouraged to use technology properly to prevent eye diseases.

Rwanda has reached a point where technology, especially telephones, computers, and other electronic devices, is widely used. As technology continues to be integrated into various aspects of daily life, some individuals with different eye conditions may be affected, often due to excessive exposure to screens.

Some people interviewed by Isango Star stated that a person may need to use technology but should also be cautious not to develop these conditions.
One person Mrs. Ingabire Devotha said, "There are times when a person spends a lot of time on the phone or computer, which is not good because the light emitted from the screen.
She continues saying that “especially when stared at for a long time, can cause eye problems."
Dr. John Nkurikiye, an ophthalmologist specialized in treating eye diseases, says that currently, eye diseases are increasing due to the introduction of its power in its treatment since health facilities, and that other eye diseases may be prevented and treated effectively with the use of technology, but he provides advice that helps people prevent them.
He says, "The problem is not getting worse, but there are other emerging issues, such as how people use phones, computers, and other devices, sometimes affecting the eyes. We need to give people advice, not to neglect these devices."
Overall, eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, and others, are on the rise, with Ministry of Health statistics showing that the number of eye diseases is expected to rise by 45% by 2020 from 512,321 in 2017.
Health Ministry research also shows that in Rwanda, 1% of people over 50 years of age are blind due to preventable reasons.
