Burera: Efforts to Mitigate Family Conflict Yield Positive Results

In the Burera district, some residents previously struggled with low living standards due to family conflicts. They believed that their livelihoods were significantly affected by misunderstandings, leading to the proliferation of negative repercussions. However, efforts to improve their livelihoods have now resulted in positive outcomes.

Some inhabitants of Cyanika sector in Burera district, located in the Northern Province of Rwanda, about 3 kilometers from the Cyanika border post, have testified that their lives were not as prosperous in the past due to misunderstandings, which often fueled negative developments.

The leader of Cyanika sector, which shares borders with Rwanda and Uganda, Mr. Venant Ngendahayo, explains that family conflicts, often driven by various factors including land disputes and financial strains, have notably decreased in the area. This change is attributed to efforts focused on enhancing community awareness and empowering individuals, particularly those in vulnerable socio-economic conditions.

The transformation of mindset within this community often stems from government initiatives aimed at enhancing community well-being through various programs and interventions targeting citizens, especially those in the lower-income bracket, to educate them and improve their skills.

Research conducted by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda for the 2019-2020 period indicated a significant improvement in the living standards of Burera district, with a recorded increase of 42% in the overall well-being index.
