May 15, 2024 - 18:07
Residents express concern about the increasing number of beggars who come to their homes, with some beggars becoming confrontational or stealing if they are refused. The district authorities say they will start punishing those who give to beggars, as they are contributing to the increase in begging.

Those who frequent the city of Huye daily say that there is now a large number of beggars. They say that these beggars are particularly visible at the Huye bus station, on the streets, at shops, at food stores, at banks, and at the market. Beggars are also seen in other places where many people gather, such as the University of Rwanda's Huye campus and at IPRC Huye.
In an interview with Isango Star, Mrs. Judith NYIRANSABIMANA said” Even if you give them, they will go back and beg, it’s a bad habit”
Mrs. Susan KIBERINKA, also said ‘’ There are some adults among them, not only children. Some of them are capable of working but choose not to; instead, they have become accustomed to wandering the streets begging and stealing."
She further added, "The young ones beg persistently and would not agree to sit still because they are used to it!"
"To address this issue, Ange SEBUTEGE, the Mayor of Huye District, says they plan to start penalizing those who assist beggars, we want to join forces in this fight because if those people come to the streets and leave empty-handed, they will not return."
In the city of Huye, some beggars have turned it into a profession. One might approach you saying they have a sick relative in the hospital and need help! Another might tell you they have run out of money for transportation, and you feel compassion and give them fare, only to realize that this is their means of livelihood when you encounter them the next day asking for help again and telling you the same story as before.
The district administration urges residents to join in the fight against this bad behavior, stressing that appropriate measures will be taken to address this issue.
