Citizens express concerns over the unfair practices of brokers

Some residents claim they are concerned about the improper conduct of people who label essential market items, known as brokers. They say that their operations lack transparency because some are involved in theft, which leads to a loss of trust. They are calling for the establishment of a regulatory body to oversee these individuals and for them to have proper identification.

Those known as brokers are often seen in various parts of Kigali and beyond, where they direct people to different goods, including houses for sale or rent, plots of land, cars, and more. However, some accuse them of dishonesty, disorder, and unclear practices.

Mr. KAYISHEMA Theophile said "A broker might come and tell you, 'This plot or house is worth 10 million,' while in reality, it's worth 8 million, and you find that 2 million has disappeared. You see, the buyer has been cheated! Two million is a lot of money. That’s how they operate badly; that’s how they earn a living.”

Speaking to IsangoStar, Mrs. Josephine GATETE asserted "They don’t have a proper association! Their cooperation is not well known, so you don’t know where to find them. For example, you find them standing here, and you ask, 'Where is your association located? Where do you have an office?' and you find they don’t have one. Maybe not all, but I’m talking about the ones I usually see around here”

Residents say that some brokers are involved in fraudulent activities.

They also mention that this leads to theft and fraud, but they see a potential solution to this chaos.

Mrs. NYIRABINEZA Godelive also said, "To make it transparent, they should be given identification documents, have a visible cooperative, have a place of operation, and be well-known."

Some people tolerate the disorder in this profession because anyone can claim to be a commissioner. However, if they were in cooperatives, no commissioner could cheat someone as they would be accountable to the law, having worked together legally.

This would also benefit them in terms of personal development.
