When the activities before the 30th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and the awareness of the activities of the Commemoration were launched, focusing on teaching the youth the consequences of choices, the values that should characterize a Rwandan who loves his country these were main topics for discussions. All this was covered under the theme 'YOUTH KNOW YOUR HISTORY'.
After explaining the history of the country, the Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement Dr. Bizimana Jean Damascène, asked the youth to stick to unity.
He said: “Continue their role in development, in protecting the country, in learning, in knowing so that they can develop themselves. Also, they should participate in promoting the real Rwanda and participate in continuing to build the nation. That's what we ask them because Rwanda is theirs, they are the ones who should continue to build and develop it, and make sure the number of enemies who continue to tarnish the image of the country does not increase.”
More than 500 young people participated in the debate on the history of the country. After 30 years, the youth who were born after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, are the majority of Rwandans.
Those who participated in these discussions, said that it made them more aware of the true history of the country.
NYIRARUKUNDO Alice, 20 years 20-year-old girl said: "We have not lived through history, but times like this are good for us as young people to listen, to be told by those who lived through it, and to be discussed. For example, today we talked with the Umurinziw’igihango(Keeper of the covenant), let's understand the resilience he had to save the Tutsi."
GATABAZI Jean Claude 21-year-old student at IPRC –MUSANZE had this to say “This discussion teaches us the role of the youth in preventing the ideology of genocide and the role of the youth in fighting against those who belittle our history as Rwandans. That's how we're going to do it."
These talks were also aimed at awakening Rwandans to reflect and be encouraged to participate in the 30th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsis, which will begin on April 7th, 2024.
These discussions took place in the Musanze district in the North Province of the country, Mr Mugabowagahunde Maurice; the governor of the province asked the youth to remain united.
He said: "The lessons you will learn here, youth, I hope will help you fight against those who tarnish the image of our country, share the lessons you learn here with your friends so that we can all work together to build the Rwanda we want."
It is 30 years since the Genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda was stopped. In the process of rebuilding Rwanda, a lot has been done, starting with building unity and reconciliation, restoring security, taking care of Genocide survivors, and resettling refugees who were chased out of the country in 1959 and those who fled in 1994 to mention but a few.
