On the 22nd of April in Rwamagana District, it was a day dedicated to the 30th commemoration of the Genocide committed against the Tutsi in 1994, especially the Tutsi who were thrown into the water at Kavumu/Gishari lake on Lake Muhazi.
There were survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsis in 1994 who were pushed into Muhazi Water, including Mrs. Mutegwaraba Domithile, who says that she has refused to go to Muhazi Water because of what she remembers. In Muhazi, the mother and her sister were stoned to death by the Interahamwe and their henchmen.
In his testimony, he confirms that Muhazi kept many bodies of those killed in the Genocide against the Tutsi, as it was difficult to survive in Muhazi where the Interahamwe patrolled the water day and night to ensure that no Tutsi breathed a sigh of relief to kill them.
The administration of Rwamagana District, at the request of some of the survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsis, has agreed to put effort into searching for the bodies that have disappeared in the Kavumu area, and now there is hope for those who have given information if there are bodies of those killed in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis that have not yet been found.
"Muhazi saved our people in many different ways," said a representative of those whose families were thrown into Muhazi.
In the Gishari Sector many units were working on Lake Muhazi, this also caused the Tutsis to be killed, most of them were pushed to go to Muhazi to see how they could kill easily, and those who did not know how to swim were killed by water.
These units operate on Muhazi from Nkomangwa and Nyarubuye, Gati, Ruhunda and Kavumu.
The President of Ibuka in Rwamagana District, Madam Musabeyezu Dative says that the memory of the Tutsis who were thrown into the water is not only in Kavumu because there are other places in Rwamagana where the Tutsis were thrown into the water, both in the lakes and ponds of Rwamagana, among these is the Kabare lake even though it is on the lake of Muhazi, Mabare dam in Rubona sector on Lake Mugesera, Kavumu dam in Gishari on Lake Muhazi, Muhondo dam in Munyiginya sector on Lake Muhazi, and Karenge dam on Lake Mugesera.
Senator Kanyarukiga Ephrem, who joined the Rwamagana people in commemorating the Tutsis who were drowned in the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, returned to the reason for the commemoration and said: "In the 6 principles of the constitution, the first one talks about the prevention and fight against Genocide, the ideology and what is reflected in that ideology if we remember that we are respecting that principle ".
A historical marker is planned to be placed on the Kavumu wall showing how the Genocide against the Tutsis in 1994 was planned and carried out. So far, there are two Genocide memorials in the Gishari sector, Gishari where 1,196 bodies are buried, and Ruhunda where 5,181 bodies are buried in honor.
