Ngoma: Prostitutes known as Indatwa ask for capital to help them start business and stop prostitution.

Prostitutes from Ngoma district say that they are ashamed of the prostitution and stressed that they engage in the practice as a last resort, and if they get capital they can stop prostitution because there is nothing good with it. Although some have been given capital and used it for drinking alcohol instead, district authorities urged those who have projects proposals to submit them to sector administration and get loans through VUP program.

Prostitutes from Kibungo town have named themselves as Indatwa. They say that
the so-called job makes them feel ashamed and pointed out that they do it due to
lack of a better job to earn a living.
“We engage into prostitution because of misery if you have some business you
cannot practice prostitution, I eat because I have been paid for sex, I plan to drink
alcohol because I have been paid for sex, if I don’t do it what will I drink?, what
will I eat? !”
Another one said “If you are wise, if you have ideas not just practicing prostitution
and having preconceived notions, any sum of money you give me I believe that
nothing is impossible to achieve if you have goals you want to achieve, I feel
ashamed, I’m worried that if my child grows and finds that I’m a prostitute it will
hurt me most than engaging into prostitution”
Prostitutes from Ngoma district known as Indatwa ask for capital as they have
tontines so they would develop themselves and stop prostitution as it is shameful to
them.
Another one said “If I get basic capital I can also stop prostitution and look for
work. If I get any amount of capital I will stop it forever, because I sell here at the
market!”
Mukayiranga Marie Gloriosa, the official in charge of social affairs says that it’s
not been long since prostitutes were given capital but some of them misused it
instead resumed prostitution.
However, she advised them how to get the capital, She said “ I think the year is not
over yet! For those who are saying that they are able to do business, initially, we
discussed and advised them, we trained and showed them that what they are doing
is wrong and thereafter, we gave them 180.000 frws. Among those we gave money to,
there are some who bought livestock …there are some who are doing business but
there are also others who used it for drinking alcohol the same day! The most
important thing is to change positively so that when one is supported financially
she should use the funds well and make profits”.
“Secondly, everyone is allowed to make business project proposal and take it to
the sector office and use the capital for business and pay in installments at the
same time earn a living”.
“What we ask these women is to change and stop bad behaviors, the funds are
available, we request the person who has been given funds is to use it well
and also progress”.
Prostitutes from Ngoma district between 60 and 80 were given capital worth
180.000 frws each, however, those from other centers claim that the funds
allocated to them is consumed by their leaders in town, what is surprising is that
they also complain of a lack of capital. The authorities should monitor how the funds
are distributed.
