People are often warned to consume substandard food or other materials because it can affect health, they are urged to check when the products they are going to buy were made and the date of expiry
However, various people confirmed to Isango Star that some care about the time of production and when the product will expire, but there are people who don't care and buy expired products well knowingly because they are cheaper.
NYIRAYUHI Claudine a 27-year-old lady said, "When we go to buy for example rice in the market, we should first check when it was made and when it will expire."
Mr. John GAKWERERE said: "But the food expiry date is not my concern. I just eat straight away. Let's say I'm out here, and I'm going to the shop and I’m in a hurry, so I have to pick the drink and move out and drink straight away! If it's juice, I'll drink it right away, if it's yogurt, I'll drink it right away...without checking.”
"If the product costs less because it is out of date, they are afraid to buy what is still unexpired because it costs more."
Raymond MURENZI; “The director general of RWANDA STANDARD BUREAU, RSB, says that what they are doing about this is a campaign because they are doing checks but they are not able to go to every store and see if the products meet the standards. ”
He said: “In the campaign, we are teaching Rwandans to use quality products. So one of the considerations in terms of quality is about the time it was produced and the time it will expire. So, that requires us to have a quality center or those we work with in the country, not at every shop in the country, but what we do, we double our efforts is campaigning, educating the public, so when you are going to buy a certain tool or a product, make sure that it meets these requirements. 'This, making sure it still has the originality. When you would find there was a problem then you would tell the quality manager to follow up.”
Normally, there are more than 3000 quality regulations in Rwanda. These are mainly related to agricultural and livestock products, and they are established to ensure that people use quality products.
At the same time, the figures of the World Health Organization, WHO, show that every year, 1 out of 10 people in the world get sick due to consuming contaminated food.
