Rwandans have been alerted by the Ministry of Health to be cautious against an infectious eye disease that is rapidly spreading in neighboring countries.

Some locals have vowed to take prevention measures although there has been eye disease even before the outbreak around the region.
According to the Ministry of Health, this disease is spread by contact. Julien Mahoro Niyingabira, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, says that this disease, if not treated properly, causes serious consequences.
He said "Its symptoms are intense redness in the white part of the eyes towards the corners of both eyes but there is redness, In addition, the eyes have a lot of tears, and sometimes a person with this disease when wakes up in the morning he finds his eyes closed and it is difficult to open them, the person with this disease is very afraid of light, "If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications including serious respiratory diseases, which can even lead to blindness."
While this disease is suspected to be caused by an adenovirus, 80% of eye infections are usually preventable. In the world, aging is the leading cause of blindness, 80% of the world's blindness is caused by aging, especially in developing countries, and those over 40 should be screened at least once. During the year, those with chronic diseases should get checked as often as possible.
Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that the number of eye diseases has increased by 45% while 89% of patients are treated at health centers. A study conducted by the Ministry of Health shows that in Rwanda, 1% of people over 50 years old are blind yet the causes could be prevented.
