Health authorities say that childhood cancer is common in Rwanda due to various reasons and that it is difficult to know the cause, according to Dr. Theoneste Maniragaba who treats cancer at the Rwanda Biomedical Center, RBC.
He said, "So far the causes of cancer have not been identified except for cervical cancer, which we already know is caused by viruses, but others we do not immediately know because research has not shown it".
These cancers that most commonly affect children include kidney cancer, blood cancer, brain cancer, and neck cancer, and doctors say more is being done to help parents understand what their children are saying at an early age.
Although the treatment is curable, doctors say that most children who are diagnosed with cancer have a curable rate of less than 70%.
