RUHANGO Residents urge authorities to speed up the construction bus station

The users of the RUHANGO bus station are requesting authorities to speed up the construction work, both the infrastructure and the rainwater drainage systems, because when it rains heavily they end up missing transportation as they take shelter from rain.

The district administration states that they are not opposed to making improvements because all possible efforts are being made to ensure that the bus station and the surrounding drainage channels are quickly cleared.

Because the RUHANGO slope lacks proper drainage when heavy rain falls, those who rely on it for services say it inconveniences them.

In an interview with Isango Star, they expressed their desire to speed up construction work.

Mrs. NYIRARUKUNDO Solina, 26 year woman said "It inconveniences travelers because when it rains heavily, they get soaked because they don’t get anywhere to take shelter from rain."

Mrs. MUREKATETE Pelagie: "It's a problem finding a suitable place to shelter. That project involves a lot of people, so halting it would be a loss! All the effort and resources invested in that construction site would go to waste. And those who can't find a place to take shelter will suffer greatly."

HABARUREMA Valens, the mayor of RUHANGO District, asserts that residents deserve no inconvenience because all possible efforts are being made to complete the construction work and drainage systems swiftly.

He said: "We have already allocated funds amounting to 410 million Rwandan Francs, out of 1.8 billion, indicating that we are nearly 23% through the project. You can see that this investment is significant and promising, and we haven't wasted it in any way."

It is expected that the RUHANGO slope will be divided into sections where travelers can find refreshments, restrooms, and even entertainment, alongside three-story commercial buildings, to accommodate vehicles.

This project commenced in April 2022, with plans indicating that the first phase would be completed by the end of that year, and the second phase would be halfway through by the end of 2023. However, as of May 2024, it is projected that the entire project will have progressed only up to 50%, with construction works not exceeding that threshold.
