The "Zero out of School Children" project started in January 2023 in the city of Kigali, but it aims to reach all 30 districts to address issues within families where children drop out of school due to various reasons. This initiative seeks to provide solutions to ensure that children return to school.
Mrs. Rose Baguma, director general in charge of policy and objectives at the Ministry of Education, states that this project is intended to prevent children from dropping out of school.
She said “We need to trace all children who have dropped out of school, whether they stopped attending or were never enrolled in the first place. This project aims to track down all of them and ensure they return to school, starting by identifying who they are, where they are, and understanding the reasons behind their absence. Once we know why a child left school, it helps us find the best way to assist them in returning."
Mrs. Solange, the director general in charge of the "Zero out of School Children" project, explains that their focus is on both tracking down children who are out of school and supporting them to ensure they return and remain in school for the long term.
She says, "At the school level, it's about actively monitoring the presence of children, bringing them into school, and ensuring they stay in school to complete their primary and secondary education successfully. This involves strong collaboration with families, as everything starts with the family. When there's a decision within the family that a child should attend school, we provide strong support to see where assistance is needed. It's a crucial message for parents and families to understand that their involvement is essential."
In this five-year project, funded by Education Above All from Qatar and implemented by Save the Children, a budget of 44 million US dollars will be allocated. This initiative aims to reach out to all 177,119 out-of-school children across the country.
