AI and peace education program empowers youth in South Sudan

South Sudan, where over 70% of the population is made up of young people, continues to face significant challenges including high unemployment and limited access to education. Supporting youth development has therefore become essential for the country’s future.

In response, the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), in partnership with the South Sudan National Youth Union (SSNYU), launched an educational initiative known as “Y-BRIDGE Academy.” The program was designed to equip youth representatives with both digital and leadership skills.

Conducted online over three weeks starting April 18, the program brought together 21 participants from across the country. It combined artificial intelligence (AI) training with peace education, helping youth develop practical skills while promoting unity and understanding.

The first sessions focused on using AI tools for proposal writing, making it easier for participants to access job and funding opportunities. Later sessions encouraged dialogue on religion and cultural heritage, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in preventing conflict.

Organizers highlighted that young people should not only learn about peace but actively practice it, becoming a “legacy of peace” in their communities.

The initiative is part of a broader agreement involving IPYG, South Sudan’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, and SSNYU, marking a shift toward practical programs that connect education with peacebuilding.

Participants praised the training for its impact, with calls to expand it to more regions, especially those with limited access to communication infrastructure. IPYG has expressed its commitment to continue supporting youth through similar collaborative programs in the future.
