Residents of the city of Kigali are complaining about those who own designated plots or are currently constructing houses, as they often cover these areas with old iron sheets or other unsightly materials. They say that these spots create a delay in development and can even become hideouts for bandits. However, the Kigali city authorities state that there is a plan in place to address this issue.

One of the indicators of the development of the city of Kigali is the continuous construction of buildings, which is accompanied by various beautification efforts to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the city. However, some aspects are considered to negatively impact the city’s image. These include areas with undeveloped plots, incomplete buildings, and spaces covered with old iron sheets and other makeshift materials.
However, those working and living near these areas say that the problem arises when the coverings deteriorate, becoming permanent sources of waste that are criticized by passersby. One resident who spoke to Isango Star about this issue stated: “We see that they are old… they look really bad. Yes, if they’re promoting something, that’s fine, but if they’re deteriorating, they should replace them with new materials to ensure cleanliness.”
Another said: “Why not just develop those areas instead of leaving them? They really don’t look good. For example, there’s a building that has been there for at least eight months. They should do something about it because it looks bad in one way or another! Isn’t that a place where criminals could hide?!”
These residents say that the government should address the issue because “our Rwanda is characterized by cleanliness, and there are many people who visit the country!” On the side of the city of Kigali, Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, its spokesperson, emphasizes that this is one of the initiatives being tackled to prevent waste and the negative impacts it could have on public health and the city’s image.
In recent days, there has been an inspection of residents in the city of Kigali regarding cleanliness, which is a hallmark of the city. Those who do not adhere to cleanliness regulations will face stricter penalties in order to encourage compliance.
