Butchers stopped selling sheep meat
May 28, 2024 - 14:38
Some people say that they do not go to butcheries to buy sheep meat. This is also confirmed by the butchers stressing that no one would buy it. However, in collaboration with the PRISM project, the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) says they are going to organize a campaign to educate Rwandans on how to prepare sheep meat as some people don’t do it due to lack of knowledge to prepare it.

Speaking to Isango Star, some people confirmed that they never go to butcheries to buy sheep meat.
Mrs. Joseline MUKANDAYISENGA said’ ’I went to the butchery to buy sheep meat and did not find it, some people say that it its sauce is not delicious and it’s not thick’’.
On the other hand, those who work in the butcheries do not disagree and assert that they don’t get customers for sheep meat even though it is as tasty as other meat.
The butchers further said that if someone tries to order sheep meat, they will slaughter it specifically for them, and they must take the whole sheep as it would be spoilt if it remained.
Mr. John GATABAZI, a butcher said ‘’No one comes asking for sheep meat unless they order for then we look for the sheep and slaughter it but they have to take it all’’
The head of the livestock department at the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), Dr. Ndayisenga Fabrice, says that mutton is as delicious as other meats and also contains sufficient nutrients.
He urges people to start consuming it because the country wants its citizens to be healthy."
He said: "If we were to say that I prefer this or that taste because it suits me best, we would not achieve the goal we want to reach. What we need to focus on primarily is ensuring that Rwandans can access the necessary nutrients to maintain good health."
To enhance sheep farming and increase their meat production, the PRISM project, prepared by the Government of Rwanda in collaboration with the International Fund for Development (IFD) in 2021, introduced a breed of sheep, which are now being raised at the RAB Gishwati Station located in the districts of Nyabihu and Ngororero.
Since their arrival in Rwanda, starting with 50 sheep, they have multiplied to reach 143 sheep.
