Understanding the principle of equality led them to commence saving

Gender-based violence is a serious issue perpetrated by the powerful, who deprive the vulnerable of their rights. This is largely due to a lack of understanding of the principle of equality and harmony which prioritizes 'joint power', where family members work together and advise each other for their development and its members. This is verified by Mrs. Uwamahoro, who was deprived of her property rights by Twizerimana.

Twizerimana Emmanuel told Isango Star, that before he understood the principle of equality and harmony between a man and a woman, he used to abuse his wife, deprive her of her rights and property, and beat her...which made them live in poverty, especially because the house they lived in was made of grasses which are known as ' Nyakatsi'.

But in just 5 years after he ascertained, life had changed and their home progressed, so they left Nyakatsi house and built a big house with tiles and other houses on the side.

Mrs. Uwamahoro Jeannette says that their conflict was caused by the fact that one side monopolized the power in the family, preventing the other.

“When we got the production, he felt that he was the one to lead. The household animals were sold, and he felt that he should control the proceeds. I felt bad because it made me feel less safe. Children are born without rights because they live in conflict. When parents don't get along well, and children can't get along well. When they told us that my husband and I had a conflict, they gave us advice and we understood, and we felt that we had abused each other without knowing it, “she stated.

“We listened to the advice and it helped us move forward. Now when it comes to the house, we are always together, we have a good relationship and you see that it is a good thing that makes them exemplary (...) now we are role models, everyone takes us as a role model,” she added.

They had never used any means of saving

Twizerimana says that when he conflicted with Mrs. Uwamahoro, they had no means of saving because he felt the money belonged to him. He would sell the harvest and put the money in his pocket. Mrs. Uwamahoro asked him the description of money, it's resulting in abuse.

“But now it's different. Understanding the principle of equality and harmony led us to have a Sacco bank account. (…) if I had it before, it would have been mine, she would not have known that I had it and that my money was there. But now she knows because we are both there, and she can see all the cash withdrawn, and she can go there to withdraw some money!”Twizerimana disclosed.

Although many see it as a problem for a woman to have money while a man does not, Twizerimana does not see it that way. He says he has no problems seeing that his wife has money, especially since it belongs to the family.

“Before it was a problem! Even now many men say that a woman with money despises a man. However, to say it is those who do not yet know equality and harmony. As we are complete with each other, I have no problem with that, because that money belongs to a family. If they want salt, or soap when I wasn't there, she will buy it. You understand that having money for my wife is not a problem," he stated.

When Twizerimana had no money, he said, "Well, if a woman has money, you also have it." When she has it, you can tell her 'You see I'm cashless, if you have money, buy for me a pant, and she will buy it'. When you don't have money, your wife doesn't too, where are you gonna get it? Who will you propose to? The good thing is that if the man doesn't have it, the woman would have it because it belongs in your family. "

He says his transformation left his wife, Mrs. Uwamahoro Jeannette, being free in everything, properties or other assets which caused the conflict, now it no longer causes any issues.

Mrs. Uwamahoro also disclosed that it raised her mindset and gained confidence and feels that she is in his family.

Their change and development led them to start a journey to help other families living with conflict, as she stressed.
